Hagiyaki (萩焼) is a style of Japanese pottery that originates from Hagi, a coastal city in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Known for its rustic charm and warm, earthy colors, hagiyaki has been cherished in Japan for centuries, particularly in the world of tea ceremonies.
One of hagiyaki’s defining characteristics is its subtle color changes, known as "kannyu"(貫入). Over time, the glaze develops small cracks and absorbs tea, deepening in color with use. This transformation is called "hagi no nanabake", the seven transformations of Hagi. It symbolizes the Japanese appreciation for wabi-sabi – the beauty of imperfection and transience.
